Abstract

Potentials of perspectiyal representation were investigated not only in Florence, but also in Padua and Milan. In Venice the influence of Padua appears probable; in Rome, artists schooled elsewhere were appointed to paint pictures for the expanding Vatican and for the churches and palaces. Fra Angelico, Melozzo da Forli represented the persons in action within well-constructed spaces. Across the Alps, in French and Flemish regions, sensorially perspectival backgrounds first appear in book illustrations, from the second half of the 15th century on, the pictures of Fouquet, of the Yan Eyck brothers and of German masters are charactcrized by spaces deepening in correct perspective. The first book, in French, on the practice of perspective by Viator was publishcd in 1505; Dürer's multiple-related Trattato was published in 1525.
