Abstract

Prime movers of Hungarian monuments preservation and history of architecture, sprouting since the '40s of the 19th century, will be presented. After the 1849 defeat of the Hungarian War of Independence, it was still the manifestation of national consciousness, a link in the chain of historical changes, initiating important works of reconstruction, of monuments preservation after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, toward the Hungarian Millennium. Across modifications of reconstruction designs of the cathedral of Pécs, the sparkingly sharp clash between views of aristocrats, high clergy, and those of lesser nobility, chapters and citizens is traced.
