Abstract

The Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is used to damp the active power oscillation and generator rotor swinging in electric power systems. The conventional PSS works successfully only in limited frequency range and it increases the oscillation below this frequency range. A new PSS structure using second order elements is proposed in this paper which has a better damping characteristic without increasing the oscillations in the whole frequency range. Four generator units using these new stabilizers are operating continuously in a nuclear power plant since November 1998.
