DIE ERSTEN LEHRSTUHLE FUR CHEMIE AN DEN UNGARISCHEN HOCHSCHULEN
Abstract
After a short introduction on the development of the medieval universities in Hungary, the authors emphasize how modern chemistry grew out of the medicine during the 16-17th centuries and was introduced in the universities by the professors of medicine. The first university chair of chemistry was founded in 1770 at the university of Nagyszombat later removed to Buda. lts first professor was the physician Jacob Joseph Winterl (1773-1809). At the Mining Academy of Selmecbánya, a chair for chemistry was founded earlier, in the year 1763. In 1846 an Industrial School was established in Pest with six chairs, one of them was the chair for chemistry with the physician Károly Nendtvich (1811-1892) as professor. This school has been transformed 1871 into a Technical University, today the Technical University Budapest.
