Abstract

In recent years substantial progress has been achieved in Austria in reducing air-polluting emissions, particularly in respect of sulfur dioxide. Further improvements are expected regarding nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and organic substances by introducing automobile exhaust gas catalysts. In future years efforts will be concentrated above all on small emittents, each emitting only slight amounts of air-polluting substances, adding up, however, into substantial contributions to total pollution. Among small emittents, particularly heating equipment using solid and liquid fuel needs technological improvement and better maintenance and operation. Several problems have not yet been solved, including nitrogen oxide, polycyclic aromatics and benzene emissions. In the elose future, air pollution imports from neighboring countries will also be in the focus of interest, since in the case of certain polluting substances they exceed domestic emissions. This problem can only be solved by improved international cooperation.
