Abstract

The review of GIS development trends shows that the germs of two main directions can be observed even nowadays. On the one hand, the simplification of systems is urged by growing number of applications first of all related to the enterprise wide information systems, on the other hand, more complex modelling tools are required by different branches dealing with spatial decision making. In both fields the standardization of data models, functions and that of processing control plays a decisive role. The introduction summarizes the reasons requiring the research of GIS functionality. In the first section the paper discusses the possibilities of GIS function standardization with an emphasis on the processing environment. The second section deals with the influence of the Open GIS concept on the standardization of functions. The third section is devoted to the problems of user-friendly controlling interfaces. The conclusion explains some ideas about the real ways of GIS development.
