Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it at another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is a PDF file. (The source file of the original document is recommended to be submitted. The illustrations, figures are included and of high quality.)
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • References closely follow the recommended format (see sample file in doc).
  • Where available, DOIs or URLs have been provided for the references.

Author Guidelines

Manuscripts should be submitted in English through our online system in PDF format, and, optionally, also in Word as a “source file” (sometimes it is much easier to reformat the manuscript for reviewers, and to send back inserted corrections to the author, moreover, it is easier for the author…). Manuscripts are accepted for review on the understanding that the same work has not been published or submitted elsewhere and that all the authors have given their approval for the submission of the paper.

The source file of the manuscript, the figures and the pictures must be uploaded only after the acceptance of the paper. For the text, any widely used word processing format of office applications (doc, docx, odf), or a simple LaTeX source (tex) is accepted. The preferred formats for pictures are jpg (moderate compression!), gif, tif, png, maybe pdf. Do not convert your vector graphics into raster format, just submit the original in a separate file.

For authors using Word

Periodica Polytechnica is typeset via InDesign, thus the text of most Office-like programs can be easily typeset using the source file. Here is an MS Word sample file and description for preparing the manuscript.

For authors using LaTeX

If you prepare your manuscript using LaTex, please use the standard article style with the standard packages (array, amsmath, graphicx,...). Avoid visual editing to improve the appearance of the manuscript like adding extra space, forced page or line break. Please keep formatting macros to a minimum, to make conversions of files more accurate. Please use standard LaTeX commands for sectioning, citation, referencing (like \section, \cite, \ref) and standard LaTeX environments (theorem-like environments, enumerate or itemize environments...) wherever possible.

In the following, all illustrations (pictures, diagrams, photographs) are referred to as figures. If a figure appears in color, please note that it will appear in color only in the online version. In the printed version it will be in black-and-white, thus this version also has to be clearly understandable.

The dimensions of the figures have strict limitations: the maximum width of them in a column is 89.5 mm, the maximum width for a two-column picture is 183 mm, and for a wide picture with side-caption is 120 mm. So try to keep lettering in a figure resized for the manuscript in a readable but moderate size (ideally equivalent to 8-10 pt).

Resolution of the figures as reduced to the final paper should have sufficient resolution (300 dpi or more in reduced size). That is, if a figure is in 150 dpi, and is reduced to 80%, it will probably be not nice.

Bibliography (References) should be carefully edited. Each item must have proper and not misunderstandable data (see the sample Word file or its PDF version for examples). If you cannot or will not upload a Word file, the bibliography must be uploaded separately, as text file. Please add the DOI number or URL of a full-text version if it exists. The DOI of journal papers can be found in page http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/ (you need to register first). DOIs must be given for conference papers, too.

A correctly compiled manuscript should contain the following items: title; if it is long, an abbreviated title for running heads on the odd pages, consisting no more than 50 characters (including spaces) and having no abbreviations; an informative abstract of 100 words, but not more than 150 words; 3-6 keywords. Since the abstract and keywords of an accepted paper will be disseminated electronically, it should make minimal use of mathematical symbols and should not contain displayed formulas or any reference to the article or its Reference list. The abstract and keywords will be offered for databases and Internet search engines.

Do not imitate the typography of the journal (except for what is done by the Word styles). The only visual restriction you have to note is the column-width (89.5 mm), so please try to keep all the displayed math formulas under this limit when it is typed with 10 pt letters.
