Abstract

A cylindric grain silo originally assembled from segments by bonding has been subsequently reinforced by hoops of pre-stressed filament wound glass-fiber rovings. After about ten years of service several of the hoops grew loose and moved downward along the wall of the silo. This phenomenon could be explained by the difference in thermal expansion between them and the silo-wall. A calculation based on the theory of thin cylindrical shells showed that in case of empty silo and low winter temperatures the contact stress between the wall and the hoops changes sign. The failure of the bond between both results in the observed loosening of the hoops.
