Abstract

The paper commemorates Donát Bánki the famous professor of the University for Technology at the 125th anniversary of his birth. Bánki's most important invention was the Bánki-Csonka four-stroke engine and connected to it the carburettor that played a major role in the development of automobilism, which was presented for patenting on February 11, 1893. Another invention was the Bánki double flow free-jet water turbine that proved to be excellent for the power utilization of small water flows. From among his theoretical experiments those concerning fluid mechanics are most important. Bánki elaborated a number of projects that preceded his era and from among which a number were realized but in the recent past. To mention but his work connected with utilizing the hydraulic power of the Iron Gates on the Danube, elaborated in 1918. He was also interested in problems of flux and reflux power, suggested as the first a front-wheel drive of automobiles and mechanical control of airplanes. Bánki also was an excellent pedagogue and had a great role in modernizing the education of mechanical engineers.
