Abstract

In this work the effect of local surface melting of cold and hot work die steels bу high energy electron bеаm was investigated. The rapid melting and solidification in the surface layer leads to very fine dendritic microstructure. In the steel Х12 after electron-beam surface melting the carbides have very small size, the content of alloying elements increased with nо segregation. The hardness of melted surface layer of steel 40X5MFSz after surface melting and heat treatment was higher than the hardness of basic metal. The better properties of melted surface layer lead to а higher tool life of dies.
