Sustainable development in urban transportation
Abstract
Three-quarters of the population of OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries are living now in urban areas. Because of this fact the most transport-related environmental and health problems occur in cities and their surroundings. The structure and growth of urban regions are therefore of crucial considerations in strategies of sustainable development. The criteria of sustainability are most of all, the clean air, the quiet neighbourhoods and the economic prosperity without detrimental impacts and depletion of finite natural resources.
