Abstract

In this paper, the effect of using additives of type ESKA in lubricating oil is examined with aircraft engines. The tests were carried out on test-bench and under real operating conditions. The charging of lub oil took place on two occasions, prior to the start of test- bench operation, and at the start of the real operation. The evaluation of wear was carried out after the test-bench operation had been finished, at half time of the real operation, and on the occasion of the first major overhaul with full disassembly. The motors had been in operation for two years prior to the first major overhaul. Up to the first major overhaul, no essential differences could be detected in wear between the motors treated with ESKA and the ones not treated with it. The wear of the motors treated with ESKA was lower by only 3-5%. This result neutral, in fact, was yielded by two decisive effects. The lub oi! consumption of aircraft engines is very high, so the ESKA content of the lub oil rapidly decreases due to the frequent re-charging. On the other hand, a more frequent charging of ESKA additive would have been resulted in a considerable increase in the operating expenses, and besides, the labour demand of operation would have also increased. Another reason for it is that up to the major overhaul, the motors suffer generally less wear - as our experiences show - so that the difference in wear can be only scarcely pointed out concerning the motors treated and untreated with ESKA. To obtain realistic result. a period of 4-6 years, i. e. the full service life of a motor would be required. On the basis of the neutral results of the two-year operation, the excess cost of the more frequent re-charge of additive ESKA, as well as the theoretical considerations, such a decision has been made that the application of additive ESKA in reciprocating aircraft engines presently is not an actual problem.
